Artefacts from the Black Box
(2023)
Thomas Folber, Artefacts from the Black Box exhibition, 2023, SASA Gallery, Adelaide, SA.
Artefacts from the Black Box presents the material traces of my creative enquiry into understanding post-digital glitch aesthetics through critical studio processes of artistic intervention and media translation.
Utilising the concept of ‘glitch’ as both methodology and method these artworks embody my phenomenological experience of traversing virtual spaces, provoking computational errors, and exploiting hypermediated aesthetics through a cyclical artistic practice that operates between both digital and tangible modes of making. Resolving in their current state through ink, paint, and pixel, these artefacts operate together as a shifting assemblage of both glitch and non-glitch, realised through diverse material substrates such as canvas, glass, wood, and electronic illumination.
Below are photographs of the 24 exhibited artworks selected from my research as they were presented across SASA and Liverpool St. Galleries in Adelaide, June 2023. These works were completed between 2018-2023. Please see individual bodies of work in the 'artworks' menu above for additional images and video of my creative outcomes during this time.
